About Dallas
Beginning with hair, everything is bigger in Dallas. Thanks in large part to Big Oil, the city's modern trademarks--gigantic office towers and flashy style--compete neck-and-neck with traditional favorites like Tex-Mex cuisine and a larger-than-life party scene. Meanwhile, if you're looking for cowboys (and we don't mean America's favorite football team), you'll have to head to nearby Fort Worth, which started out as a Texas frontier town and cattle market.
Go to Dallas in the fall, if possible, and catch the State Fair. People from all around the country come to experience a "Texas Sized" fair that has everything a fair is supposed to have. Enjoy inexpensive accommodations, great food, and plenty to do in the evenings. Take a fishing rod, as well. There are plenty of good lakes around Dallas, and I'll get some reviews on line soon.
Take the Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) rail system. For $1, you can get a day pass that gives you unlimited access to the system. Ride from downtown to West End for night life, Fair Park, the Dallas Zoo, and up to North Dallas for shopping. It will soon reach as far north as Plano, and as far West as the DFW Airport.
But you may want to take the bus as well. Many sights and sounds of Dallas are a few miles from DART.
